Reel to Real: Representation of Social Movements in Indian Cinema

Abstract

This study examines how Indian cinema has documented and promoted social movements, including political dissent, women’s empowerment, caste discrimination, and labor advocacy, from the freedom struggle to the present day. Using a case-study approach across ten seminal films, the paper analyzes historical claims, narrative frameworks, and cinematographic styles to argue that Indian film has served the dual purpose of documenting social reality and catalyzing activism and public debate.
